Founder story

Why I built
myDinnerPlan.

I was tired of the last-minute “what’s for dinner?” scramble — late dinners, takeout bills, unused groceries, and buying the same item twice. This app grew out of that mess, one tweak at a time, for about three years. I’m sharing it so other households can get the same calmer evenings at a low cost.

The 5pm problem at home

Most nights the stress was not cooking skill. It was deciding, shopping, and coordinating who was home. Without a plan, dinner ran late. Without a list tied to that plan, we wasted money on takeout, left produce to go bad, and made duplicate grocery runs for things we already had.

I wanted one place for our own meals, a week I could see ahead of time, and a shopping list that matched the plan — so 5pm stopped feeling like a panic.

Why meal kits were not the answer

I tried the major meal kits. Some of the food was good. The problem was the model: you are always cooking someone else’s meal, and you often cannot put that same dinner back on your menu when your household asks for it again.

We have favorite meals and family must-haves. Those belong on our calendar — not in a one-time box. That is why myDinnerPlan is dinner-planning software, not a meal kit. You keep the recipes you already love, fill gaps from the public library, and plan a week your household will actually eat.

Built for our house, then opened up

What you see today did not arrive as a big launch. It grew from small fixes over roughly three years — recipe storage, a weekly plan, pantry-aware shopping lists, household RSVPs, reminders — whatever reduced our own friction next.

When it started simplifying our evenings the way I hoped, I wanted to share it. Pricing stays low on purpose: a real free tier to start, with Basic and Pro when you want automation and household tools. If it helps your week feel calmer the way it helped mine, that is the point.
